There is something magical about the word evergreen. Just the sound of it brings a feeling of nostalgia. Upon hearing the word evergreen, it’s easy to picture verdant and enduring growth, even in the harshest of wintry landscapes. We may see tall pines or possibly towering cedars covered in persistent snowfall.
Perhaps on some level, we celebrate the evergreen for its determination to persevere, regardless of what the world around it is doing. In a way, it offers us motivation to do the very same thing in our own lives. Mother nature is full of inspiration, isn’t she?
The main botanical classification of evergreens refers to their resilient nature. This is to say, evergreen shrubs and trees have foliage that remains green through the winter months and persists into the next growing season.
While other plants lose their leaves, die back to the roots, or have perished altogether, evergreen shrubs continue to not only function but thrive too. As a result, we get to celebrate their enduring beauty, vivid color, and visual interest through all seasons.
Evergreen bushes offer a plethora of foliage characteristics. Some display long and sharply pointed needles with cones. Others fan out as with hardy ferns. While still others offer a soft, more delicate pattern of growth, and are adorned with berries.
There are dozens upon dozens of types of evergreen shrubs, but some of the most popular ones are easy to distinguish. Yew is a type of needle-leaf evergreen that grows upright and makes for great hedges. Junipers also have needles but are drought-tolerant and come in a bluish-gray color.
Boxwoods and hollies are also evergreen shrubs but they have leaves instead of needles. Boxwoods grow well in moist soil while holly is easily distinguished by its lush, green foliage and red berries. There are countless other types of evergreen bushes, but these are some of the most popular. One of our favorite boxwood shrubs is the NewGen Freedom® Shrub!
Perfect Plants offers dozens of types of evergreen shrubs for sale, so be sure to browse and find one that fits your outdoor decor all year round.
Popular evergreen shrubs can include boxwoods, hollies, yews, arborvitae, laurels, nandinas, rhododendrons, junipers, and even some cold-hardy ferns. Choose from our large array of evergreens here.

Technically speaking, evergreen shrubs can be planted at any point throughout the year, but spring is still preferred. If you plant in the spring, your shrubs will be able to better establish themselves when the earth is no longer frozen. Not only do evergreens stay lush and beautiful through the year, but they tend to be drought tolerant and disease resistant as well.
Hardiness may vary, but most evergreens maintain their foliage in USDA zones 2 through 9. Evergreens come in all shapes and sizes. Often, we see rounded forms, pointed or pyramidal shapes, tall and upright growth, and of course, low spreading types too. Some are as tall as 15 feet, while others only rise to about 2 to 4 feet. There is sure to be one that’s perfect for your garden.
Evergreen shrubs prefer a well-draining medium and will thrive in acidic soil conditions. Sulfur, manure, peat moss, pine needle mulch, and coffee grounds can all be added to the soil to give it the desired pH.
Fertilize your evergreen shrubs in spring with a slow-release plant food. You can also fertilize again in the fall if desired.
While it varies from plant to plant, most types of evergreen shrubs are relatively fast growers. Some hollies will grow about 2 feet per year while smaller species of boxwoods may grow less than 6” a year.
Naturally, evergreen shrubs offer visual interest through all growing seasons. Therefore, place them in locations where they can really shine. Sometimes it’s a good idea to go into your house and look through your larger windows. Think about where you would like to see your shrubs during the various seasons of the year.
For instance, if you love bird watching, plant evergreen flowering shrubs closer to your windows and in full view from your favorite sitting area. If you want reliable privacy shrubs, even through the most barren parts of winter, plant your evergreens in places where they will provide the best visual screening from neighbors and passersby.
Start browsing our evergreen shrubs for sale and start looking for new ways to add more color to your home. Place your evergreens along walkways, near foundations, or in mixed planter beds. Use them as border hedges, wind breaks, and for privacy screening. No matter the layout, there is sure to be a type of evergreen bush that compliments your unique yard space.
Evergreens are also ideal for your porch, patio, or deck. House your evergreen bushes in decorative pots and planters for a luxurious aesthetic, no matter the time of year.
