Indoor Ficus Care Overview

Ficus plants originate from tropical southeastern Asia, so they like warm weather, shade, and water. They’re best used as a house plant in the US since they can only grow outdoors in the hottest zones. Direct sunlight isn’t good for them, so keeping them near a window with bright light away from the rays will keep your plant happy.

Ficus plants like to be root bound, so you don’t need to repot them until their roots take up about three-fourths of the soil. When it’s time to move to a bigger pot, only go 1-3 inches bigger in diameter since they want a cozy container.

How to Plant Ficus Plants

Choose a pot for your Ficus that’s 1-2 inches larger than the root ball. Fill the pot with some soil so that the top of the root ball is almost at the same level as the edge of the pot. Fill empty spaces with soil to the edge of the pot and water the plant well.

Be sure the pot you choose has drainage holes, so the soil doesn’t stay too wet. Wet soil will increase the risk of root rot and cause the plant to die.

Ficus Plant Heights and Zoning

How Often to Water Ficus Plants

Water your Ficus plant when the top of the soil feels dry. It likes to stay consistently moist, but letting the top get dry will prevent it from getting overwatered. You can mist the leaves daily to keep the humidity up if your house is dry.

Water your Ficus less often in the winter when it isn’t growing as much. You can allow the top 2-3 inches to dry out between waterings.

How to Prune A Ficus Plants

Ficus plants need very little pruning. You can avoid pruning altogether if you want! If you don’t want your plant to get any taller, you can trim off the top of the main branch to encourage the plant to push out lateral growth instead of continuing to grow vertically. It will make your plant look fuller and prevent it from getting too tall.
