Ficus plants, better known as rubber plants, are a favorite choice for many house plant enthusiasts. They’re easy to care for and have beautiful glossy foliage that will spruce up your home. They’re known to purify the air, so they’re good to keep around. Rubber plants can be grown indoors in any room with bright indirect sunlight. If a room has a window, you should be able to grow a Ficus.
Short rubber plants look beautiful on accent tables in seating areas or on the dresser in a bedroom. Taller plants are great sitting in the corner, next to sofas, or sitting in the dining room. A rubber plant has you covered if you need a pop of color!
The Variegated Rubber Plant is a popular choice because of its unique coloration reminiscent of camouflage, sporting light and dark greens, creamy white, and tan foliage. The Ficus Elastica ‘Ruby’ has beautiful pink and dark green leaves that will stand out among other plants. If you’re new to rubber plants, try our Fiddle Leaf Fig Bundle, which comes with a plant, soil, and fertilizer.
Ficus plants originate from tropical southeastern Asia, so they like warm weather, shade, and water. They’re best used as a house plant in the US since they can only grow outdoors in the hottest zones. Direct sunlight isn’t good for them, so keeping them near a window with bright light away from the rays will keep your plant happy.
Ficus plants like to be root bound, so you don’t need to repot them until their roots take up about three-fourths of the soil. When it’s time to move to a bigger pot, only go 1-3 inches bigger in diameter since they want a cozy container.
Choose a pot for your Ficus that’s 1-2 inches larger than the root ball. Fill the pot with some soil so that the top of the root ball is almost at the same level as the edge of the pot. Fill empty spaces with soil to the edge of the pot and water the plant well.
Be sure the pot you choose has drainage holes, so the soil doesn’t stay too wet. Wet soil will increase the risk of root rot and cause the plant to die.
Ficus plants usually grow 3-6 feet tall and 2-4 feet wide. The Fiddle Leaf Fig Tree will grow 10 feet tall and 5 feet wide. As the plants grow and the roots take up all the dirt, you’ll need to upsize their pots so they can have more room.
Ficus plants can be grown indoors in any zone, but they’re only suitable outside in zones 10 or warmer. It prefers shade outside but can be grown in indirect light indoors.
Water your Ficus plant when the top of the soil feels dry. It likes to stay consistently moist, but letting the top get dry will prevent it from getting overwatered. You can mist the leaves daily to keep the humidity up if your house is dry.
Water your Ficus less often in the winter when it isn’t growing as much. You can allow the top 2-3 inches to dry out between waterings.
Ficus plants keep their bright colors and glossy leaves when they have enough nutrients. Provide your plants with slow-release fertilizer once each year or according to package directions. You can also use a liquid fertilizer if you prefer that method every time you water.
Our Fiddle Leaf Fig Fertilizer is a slow-release fertilizer you can feed your plants every six months. The nutrients are balanced specifically for Fiddle Leaf Figs, so you can be confident that it’s getting everything it needs.
Ficus plants need very little pruning. You can avoid pruning altogether if you want! If you don’t want your plant to get any taller, you can trim off the top of the main branch to encourage the plant to push out lateral growth instead of continuing to grow vertically. It will make your plant look fuller and prevent it from getting too tall.
