Growing delicious huge blueberries at home has never been easier - all you need is a Chandler Blueberry (Northern Highbush). This cold hardy bush requires minimal maintenance, and you'll have plenty of sweet, juicy fruit to enjoy picked right off your own bushes. In fact, it has some of the biggest berries of any variety!
The Chandler Blueberry Bush is an ideal variety for home gardeners of all levels. Its large-sized berries are sweet and juicy, and due to its hardiness, it can withstand heat and cold climates alike. It is rated for hardiness grow zones 4 through 7 and can endure temperatures as low as -15 F.
Your Chandler Blueberry bush is also self-pollinating. Although you only need 1 shrub to enjoy its sweet fruit, planting them near another highbush blueberry variety will increase your harvest.
When selecting a site for your Chandler Blueberry Bush, pick an area with well-draining soil and full sun. Remove weeds from the area and rake the soil to loosen it. If the soil is sandy or contains a lot of clay, incorporate an organic compound like compost or peat moss.
The bush should be planted in holes dug out twice as large as the bush itself, so prepare your holes before planting. Also, ensure you add plant food like an all-purpose fertilizer prior to planting for extra nourishment.
Once your holes are prepared, place the Chandler Blueberry Bush in the hole at the same level it is currently growing. Fill the area around the bush with soil and tamp it down lightly.
After planting, give your blueberry bush adequate water to ensure it develops deep roots. The soil should be kept moist but not overly saturated. Water once a week and apply mulch if you have sandy soil to retain additional moisture.
