Fragrant Perennial Shrub or Herb Used for Cooking Brings Tons of Pollinators!

The Tuscan Blue Rosemary plant is a lovely and aromatic addition to any garden!

Rosmarinus officinalis ‘Tuscan Blue’, as it is botanically named, produces clusters of showy blue flowers in the spring and summer months. These violet-blue blooms are perfect for attracting pollinators like bees and butterflies to your perennial herb garden, and contrasts the fragrant dark green foliage perfectly! Rosemary plant flowers are edible and taste similar to the leaves with a slight sweetness. Rosemary grows year-round and is an evergreen perennial shrub that will keep its green color all year long.

Plant the Tuscan Rosemary shrub in ornamental shrub borders, edible herb gardens, as a specimen plant, or even in a container where the plant can be maintained to your desired size and shape. It is salt tolerant, and heat and drought tolerant as well. Plus, deer resistant! Growing rosemary is easy and fun. You can, of course, use fresh rosemary leaves as needed for cooking or dry a sprig of rosemary to store in your spice rack! The best time to harvest rosemary is in spring or summer for the best flavor.

Tuscan Blue Rosemary Plant Care

Grow this evergreen shrub across the United States in USDA hardiness zones 7-10. It may need extra winter protection in the first year of planting when temperatures are below freezing in zone 7 or below. Tuscan Blue Rosemary cold hardiness can be tested in your area by keeping an eye on the foliage during nights with hard freezes. If your plant displays browning of foliage, you will need to protect it or bring it indoors during the cold winter.

Moist, well-draining soil is best for this rosemary bush and it prefers full sun. It can tolerate partial shade but the flavor of the culinary herb will not be as intense. The Tuscan Blue Rosemary height is up to 6 feet tall at maturity and 2-4 feet wide. The fragrant shrub will grow to the area that you plant it in and has an upright growth habit.

You can grow rosemary indoors in a south-facing window with at least 6 hours of bright light. We do recommend a terra cotta pot with good drainage and air circulation. Only water when the soil is dry.

Tuscan Blue Rosemary care includes an annual application of slow-release fertilizer in the early spring and mulch to help retain moisture. Pruning rosemary plants should be done in early spring to encourage new growth during the active growing season and you should shape the plant to the size you want. Pruning shears are best for this to get a clean cut on the woody stems.

Water the plant thoroughly the first year of planting to establish a strong root system. Potted rosemary will need more water than planted in the ground but be sure not to overwater and cause root rot.
