Gorgeous Bright Pink Blooms Create a Show in the Landscape

Weigelas are tough and hardy shrubs that produce an abundance of blooms in the springtime. The Wine & Roses Weigela Shrub cultivar out-shines many other weigela varieties with two bloom seasons each year. Radiant pink blooms paired with deep purple foliage are a spectacular sight in the landscape and make the shrub live up to its name of Wine & Roses.

Weigela is an old-fashioned shrub that remains ever-popular due to its profuse bloom production in spring. The Weigela Wine & Roses, or Weigela florida 'Alexandra' as it is botanically name, will give you two bloom displays each year.

The bright pink blooms are shaped like trumpets and appear in the late spring for the first bloom season, followed by a second bloom season in the summer. The spring blooms are much more abundant but the summer blooms put on quite a show as well.

Paired with these attractive pink blooms is the deep purple foliage which makes for an attractive and eye-catching shrub. The deciduous shrub will retain its deep purple foliage color all summer and drop its leaves after the first fall frost.

The multitude of pollen-filled blooms are attractive to bees and hummingbirds and the shrub repels deer.

Roses & Wine weigela is a shrub that can be used as a specimen or border plant. It’s ideal to use along with other flowering shrubs to create a mixed border that will produce blooms from spring until fall. The deep purple foliage will provide 3-season interest and is an attractive backdrop shrub for annual flowers.

Dwarf Wine & Roses weigela has the same dark purple foliage and pink trumpet-shaped flowers but it has a more compact growing habit. Dwarf Weigela Wine & Roses creates a small mounding shrub that is ideal for growing in a container on a sunny patio or balcony.

Wine and Roses Weigela Care

Feed Wine & Roses weigela once a year in the winter with a food formulated for shrubs and trees that contains iron and sulfur.

Apply food before the soil unfreezes in late winter. A late winter feeding will promote vigorous bloom production in the spring. If you miss the winter feeding, apply plant food around the base of the shrub in early spring.

Hardy in USDA growing zones 4-8, the Wine & Roses weigela will not need any special care to overwinter outdoors.

Keep the soil moist for a newly planted weigela for the first month. After the pink shrub becomes established it will only need 1-inch of water per week.

How to Plant Weigela Wine and Roses

Plant this shrub in full sun for the greatest show of springtime blooms. Weigela may also be planted in light shade, however, the shrub will not produce as many blooms.

Weigelas don’t like soggy or dry soil and need to be planted in well-draining soil that retains moisture. Use a planting mix that contains compost when planting the shrub in a container and incorporate compost into the soil before planting the shrub outdoors.

Weigela Wine and Roses Size

Wine & Roses weigela has an upright growing habit and will reach a mature size of 5-feet wide and 5-feet tall. The growth rate is up to 1 foot per year.

Pruning Wine and Roses Weigela

The shrub can be lightly pruned as needed to keep the shrub the desired size and shape. Do a hard pruning in winter to remove the older interior branches and to increase the bloom production in spring.  Flowers bloom on old wood so choose to prune after it has finished flowering for the year.
