Fast-Growing Evergreen Privacy For Your Yard

This evergreen shrub is one of our hands-down winners for creating green, lush living privacy screens. ‘Chindo’ viburnum, (Viburnum awabuki ‘Chindo’), is also known as Chindo sweet viburnum or mirror leaf viburnum.

Viburnum Chindo is the smart choice for privacy screens, hedges, living fences, or windbreaks. Their tall nature and year-round interest make them a great addition to your property. Privacy Chindo Viburnum hedges establish quickly and provide the seclusion you need and want!

Unlike other privacy shrubs, they keep their branches down to the ground level even after reaching maturity.  V. awabuki ‘Chindo’ retains its leaves year-round and sports 3-6 inch long dark green, waxy foliage.

‘Chindo’ are perfect for neighborhoods that don’t allow privacy fences or where you don’t want to have the hard wall look of a fence but still need a visual barrier.

‘Chindo’ is an excellent viburnum to add wildlife habitat to your yard. The Chindo Viburnum flowers are lightly fragrant and white in color. They establish in the springtime and mature into red berries in the summer, which ripen to almost black in fall. It is common for your new shrub to take 2-3 years after transplanting before it begins to flower.

Add a few ‘Chindo’ viburnums to your property and watch those problem areas fade into green.

Chindo Viburnum Care Information

‘Chindo’ viburnums can be grown in USDA zones 7-11. They are not very cold-hardy and will not withstand bitterly cold temperatures.

‘Chindo’ is happy with full to partial sun. It will benefit from a bit of afternoon shade if you are at the southern end of its range.

Chindo Viburnum Size

Growing quickly to an impressive 12’ tall and 8’ wide at maturity, these viburnums can be planted closer together for a quick, dense privacy screen or windbreak. Chindo viburnum spacing should be at least 5-8 feet apart depending on the look you are going for.

They can be pruned to make a shorter, more uniform hedge. If left unpruned and wild, the ‘Chindo’ viburnum can sometimes reach heights of 20 feet in full sun environments.

‘Chindo’ viburnum is tolerant of most soils but will do best on moist, fertile, well-drained sites. No pH adjustments should be needed unless your soils are highly acidic or alkaline.

Mulch under your new ‘Chindo’ viburnums to control weeds and grass and even out soil moisture. Reapply yearly or as necessary.

Chindo Viburnum Growth Rate

A fast grower, ‘Chindo’ viburnums can add 1-2 feet per year, creating a quick, dense, year-round screen for your deck, patio, pool, or property line. Once established, these shrubs are tough and drought-tolerant, needing little maintenance.

Chindo Viburnum Pruning

‘Chindo’ viburnum should only need pruning for shape-keeping or removing an injured or dead stem. Prune after flowering in the fall to preserve next year’s blooms, even though some berries will be lost.

You may wish to keep ‘Chindo’ pruned to reduce its size and attain a more uniform appearance if used as a hedge. Left unpruned, it will have a more wild and open form.

If your Chindo Viburnum needs more extensive pruning due to lack of vigor, do so in the late winter before the flush of new growth in the spring.

You can also prune your shrub into a Chindo Viburnum tree with a single trunk if that is the desired look.
