Remarkable Contrasting Colors on this Low Maintenance Hosta Variety

Hosta Fire and Ice offers a striking display of contrasting color and texture throughout most of the year. Its uniquely variegated foliage is full of daring personality and is sure to dazzle the eyes. So, don’t be surprised when you hear “oohs and aahs,” from neighbors and passersby.

The Fire and Ice Hosta plant is a clump-forming herbaceous perennial that is also known as the Plantain Lily. It is mainly grown for its attractively robust foliage and for its tendency to thrive in the shade. It is native to the woodlands and glades of Russia, China, Korea, and Japan.

The majestic foliage of Fire and Ice Hosta lily plant shows off bright creamy-white centers that contrast beautifully with darker shades of deep green edging. The lush heart-shaped foliage of ‘Fire and Ice’ grows densely and twists upward delicately.

Individual leaves are large, wide, and taper to a point. They are also somewhat funneled when young, and then flatten out as they grow to full size. Additionally, Fire and Ice leaves feature the attractive ridging or fluting that hostas are known for.

Bell-shaped flowers emerge anytime between late spring to midsummer and will continue to bloom through the fall until the first frost. The fragrant flowering stalks stand tall above the magnificent foliage below and reach to be about 20 inches tall.

Hosta flowers attract hummingbirds and other beneficial pollinators! The Fire and Ice Hosta also makes a great housewarming gift.

Fire and Ice Hosta is the perfect understory plant for woodland forest gardens and even grows under black walnut trees. However, they do best with deeply rooted trees, so as to not compete for space. This hosta is also excellent for borders, edging, and decorating walkways. It also does well in large, oversized pots to bring a dramatic effect to your outdoor living space.

Hostas in general, are one of those rare breeds that grow well on the north-facing side of buildings, and as such, make a wonderful foundation plant. In fact, real estate professionals often use hostas to beautify and enhance curb appeal.

Fire and Ice Hosta Care Information

Fire and Ice Hosta is hardy, pest-resistant, and very easy to care for. If problems ever arise it is usually due to slugs and snails. Traps can easily be set to counteract snails and slugs. Deer and rabbits also tend to feast upon their leaves, given the opportunity. Leaves can be sprayed with a bitter feeding deterrent.

Fire and Ice Hosta grows best in USDA hardiness zones 3 through 9. Hostas tend to thrive in climates with cold winters and warm summers, but there are a variety of hostas adapted to your specific zone.

This lovely hosta prefers partial shade or full shade. It also does well with morning sun followed by afternoon shade. Continuous dappled shade is also great for this hosta.

Water regularly or as needed in extreme heat. If you are growing your hosta in a large pot, be sure to water it more often. When your hosta is first established in the ground, be sure to water it more often to encourage the roots to grow deeply. Root structures grow to be about one foot deep and two feet wide. Avoid allowing the soil to dry out as optimal growing conditions need a consistently moist environment.

Hostas prefer rich and loamy soil with plenty of organic matter to add fertility. They also desire consistently moist, well-draining soil. Fertilize your Fire and Ice Hosta with slow-release flower and rose food. It is also beneficial to add compost and/or mulch around the base of your hostas to help with water retention.

Fire and Ice Hosta Size

Fire and Ice has a mounded growth habit. Depending upon your region, this hosta will reach between 8 to 22 inches tall and about 12 to 30 inches wide. Space your hostas about 30 inches apart for a continuous border or mass planting.

Some hostas will last through snowy weather. If your hosta dies back in winter, expect new growth to reemerge promptly in spring. Spent flower shoots should be removed to encourage reblooming throughout summer and fall. Propagation via division is best accomplished in spring or summer.
