Swiss Cheese Anyone? Have Some in Plant Form With This Houseplant
Monstera deliciosa shrub, aka the Split Leaf Philodendron or Swiss Cheese Plant, adds a touch of dark green decor to any room inside your home!
The joys of watching a Monstera leaf slowly unfurl simply cannot be compared! Your plant will ship with mostly solid green leaves. As the plant matures, the heart shaped leaves will start to produce fenestrations or the leaf holes that give this houseplant its nickname of “Swiss Cheese”. Each leaf is unique with glossy green color and cuts or ribbons where the perforated leaves split.
Native to tropical rainforests, it is easily adaptable to indoor growing and makes lovely home decor. Growing quite large in the wild, it’s good to keep in mind that you will need some room to grow the Monstera plant indoors and have it thrive. Additionally, this philodendron plant grows tall and will need support such as a moss pole or trellis to climb upon.
Grown indoors, you typically won’t see the philodendron Monstera flower. But if you grow Monstera deliciosa outdoors you can see beautiful flowers and edible fruit.
MONSTERA DELICIOSA CARE
With easy care and little maintenance, an indoor Monstera deliciosa is hard not to add to your plant collection! Monstera deliciosa plants like room temperatures that stay warm and humid around 65-80 F. Feel free to mist the leaves to enhance the humidity just like it would receive in the wild. Monstera deliciosa pruning can help to keep your plant to the desired size and shape.
Growers across the United States in USDA hardiness zones 9 and up can grow this tropical plant outdoors all year long.
Best Soil for Monstera Deliciosa Plants
A well draining soil that is rich in nutrients is the best choice for your new indoor plant! Any potting mix with extra added perlite or peat moss will do just the trick to keep your Split Leaf Monstera looking its best without getting waterlogged or wet roots. Be sure to choose a container with a drainage hole to allow excess water to drain and avoid soggy soil.
Monstera Deliciosa Light Requirements
The large leaves of mature Monstera deliciosa plants require lots of bright indirect light conditions to thrive. Luckily, having holey leaves helps the light filter through to the bottom branches and leaves. Choose a sunny window with lots of indirect light. A south or east facing window is best. Too much sun can cause leaf scorch or burn.
How Often to Water Monstera Deliciosa Plants?
Monsteras are quite drought tolerant once established. We recommend watering once weekly or whenever the potting soil feels dry to touch. Too much watering can cause your plant to have wet feet or root rot which isn’t recommended for optimal growth.
How Big Does Monstera Deliciosa Grow?
An outdoor monstera deliciosa size at maturity can grow up to 30 feet tall if left untamed. This is uncommon when grown as indoor house plants. Indoors, the split leaf monsteras can grow up to 4-6 feet tall and 3-4 feet wide. The Monstera deliciosa growth rate is up to 1-2 feet per year. An annual application of slow release fertilizer during the active growing season will help to increase growth.
Repotting Monstera Deliciosa Plants
Your plant will come in a 6 inch pot and may need to be repotted shortly after arrival. Repotting monstera is a good idea if the plant is root bound and freshen up the soil to give new nutrients. The right pot size for monsteras would be 2-3 times bigger than the plant pot it is currently in. Monstera plants prefer to be slightly root bound and aerial roots may start to form around the edges. It is totally normal and adds to the aesthetic appeal of this unique plant. Additionally, some plants may produce “pups” or baby monsteras that you can keep growing in the same pot or propagate into a new pot to give to friends.
We love Monstera deliciosa Swiss Cheese plants for their low maintenance qualities and ability to brighten any room!
*Disclaimer: Monstera leaves are toxic to cats or people if ingested.

Once your Monstera Deliciosa Shrub order is placed, we will ship your plant(s) within seven business days year round unless during the checkout process you request otherwise in the space provided to do so.
Perfect Plants’ shipping specialists carefully package your plants using a proven packaging method that ensures your plants arrive healthy, colorfully alive and ready to flourish. We’ve coined the term ‘upside down box test’ and we do just that; we carefully package so that regardless of the direction your box is handled, it will not harm your precious plant that’s inside.
No shipping process is without a problem from time to time. On rare occasions some plants may experience some of the following during their transit: drooping, minor leaf-loss and/or minimal yellowing/discoloration, minor limb damage, etc. These instances are quite rare, but can happen when shipping plants in boxes.
Plants normally recover within a few weeks after planting. If a damaged box has injured your plant on the inside, please notify us within 5 days of receiving you package(s) by emailing us a photograph of the damage.
We always do our very best to ensure that your plants are packed and shipped in the safest, gentlest and most effective way possible.
Will my plants and trees look like the photographs?
Absolutely! Unlike other online nurseries, our photos are of actual plants and trees we’ve grown here, on our family operated nursery.
Growing our own plants and trees helps to ensure we ship you the best quality plants that are free of pests and diseases.
Your plants and trees may however not ship with flowers on them, like the photographs. This all depends on the time of year you buy your plant or tree. Crape Myrtle trees, for example, only bloom during the summer months, so if you purchase one during the spring or fall, they would ship without flowers. Once planted, your plants will grow and thrive giving you flowers for many years to come!
Pot sizes (commonly referred to in gallons) are shipped in the same size nursery trade pots which may vary in actual volume. Some plants may have been at the approximate pot size listed, but require excess dirt to be removed so that you will not be paying any additional shipping costs. This doesn’t happen very often though.
Our shipping charges are based on the value of your order. Please use the chart below to see what your shipping charge will be.
Choose a planting location that offers adequate sunlight and shade in a low traffic area. Allow proper clearance for the mature growth size. Well-drained soil is ideal. Water regularly for the first planted year to ensure adequate water is available for establishing a strong root system. Prune as necessary to remove any damaged or dead foliage and to promote a well-balanced structure.
Dig a hole approximately twice as wide as your new plant’s root ball and deep enough so that the top of the root ball is equal with the ground level.
Loosen the root ball using a small garden spade or by hand. Breaking smaller outer roots can encourage growth into the new soil, but take care to not damage large primary roots.
Place the plant in the hole and ensure that it is situated evenly upright. Use the excavated soil to fill in around the root ball, using your foot to pack it in firmly. Thoroughly soak with a hose as you fill in the dirt. Take great care to not leave any gaps or air spaces around the root ball as this could kill the plant.
A 2-4 inch layer of mulch is strongly recommended to help retain moisture and discourage weed growth. Apply mulch over the entire planting area but keep away from the stems or trunk by a few inches. Ensure that the plant and surrounding soil is completely soaked with water.
To ensure the proper nutrients are available for the life of your plant our proprietary Perfect Plants Special Blend Soil and a once yearly application of Nutricote Total 360 Fertilizer are great considerations for your new plants!
