If you are looking to harvest blackberries right in your own backyard, the Prime Ark® Freedom blackberry bush is the perfect choice for you! This thornless blackberry has large berries and good flavor.
This blackberry variety is disease resistant and drought tolerant. The fruit bush will start to flower in the early spring. The fruiting season will begin to ripen its large sweet fruit in July all the way through the first frost. The more fruit you pick will increase the number of fruit the following year.
The Prime Ark blackberry is free of pesky thorns, and produces black berries large to extra large in size, have a sweet taste, and are firm in texture. Similar to its thornless berry relative, the triple crown blackberry.
The fruit size alone is a good reason to plant these blackberry plants. They are perfect for home gardeners and can even be grown in containers wherever the climate is suitable. Prime ark blackberries grow up to 4-5 feet tall and 3-4 feet wide at maturity. Kids love blackberries too!
Prime Ark Freedom Blackberry Care
The Prime Ark Freedom does best in full sun and loamy, well-drained soil. It can tolerate clay soil as long as the watering schedule is kept up to date. The bush prefers soil moist to establish its strong root system during the first growing season. Good drainage is essential to prevent root rot as well as annual soil amendments such as a slow release fertilizer in the spring will help when producing fruit.
It is self-pollinating and can grow across the United States in USDA hardiness zones 4-8. This blackberry variety exhibits excellent cold hardiness and plants will survive the winter temperatures if covered during hard freezes.
The blackberry plant was originally part of the University of Arkansas’s primocane breeding program and is the first thornless primocane fruiting blackberry variety of its kind. This means more blackberry fruit faster as it fruits on new growth, unlike most other blackberries.
This extends the fruit harvest time too. So as the new canes produce early season berries, the older canes will produce later season berries on previous year’s canes. The semi erect canes will eventually need to be pruned after they have fruited 2 times.
This blackberry plant ships rooted in soil in a container. They do not ship bare root. Plants will arrive in excellent condition. They are very hardy. If this is not the case, please contact us.
This summer bearing blackberry bush will start to flower and bear fruit + delicious berries in the first year of planting.
