Thuja Green Giant

Product Description

The Thuja Green Giant tree will add a lush, green privacy screen to your yard in no time! One of our most favorite fast growing trees.

The National Arboretum presents the ‘Green Giant’ which is a vigorously growing, pyramidal shaped evergreen with dark green color that remains outstanding throughout hardiness range. Thuja is perfect for privacy tree needs as it is a hybrid of the thuja plicata tree that graces the northwest.

Thuja tree is ornamentally appealing as a single plant, a dense screen, or as a living frame for your landscape or garden. Plant your tree at your property line for ultimate privacy function. Don’t worry about the deer! It is deer resistant.

Thuja Green Giant arborvitae is a large, evergreen sentinel in any landscape. Living up to its name, this “giant” tolerates a wide range of soil and hardiness zones and has little pest or disease problems on its rich green foliage.

Thuja Green Giant Care

The thujas hardiness zones are best in zones 5-9 across the United States. The landscape tree performs best in moist, fertile, well-drained soils in full sun to partial shade. This large tree cannot handle wet sites or poorly drained soil types.

The Thuja Green Giant growth rate for this emerald green arborvitae is extremely fast! It can grow up to 3-5 feet per year once established; and it can reach up to 40 feet tall and 20 feet wide at maturity. As young plants, they grow faster during the spring and summer growing season more than any other season.

Slow release fertilizers at the base of the root ball will help give this tree the boost it needs in early spring. The root system will establish after 1 year if watered thoroughly. After 1 year, it is fairly drought tolerant. Thuja Green Giant spacing should be planted at least 5-15 feet apart because of their girth and length.

More info:

Some use it as a hedging plant to line a fence in their yard in a straight row. You can also do it in a double row spacing. Bushier than our Leyland Cypresses. But still the same Christmas tree like form. You can prune your Thuja tree into a shorter hedge for a single row spaced and keep the height at 12-15 feet.

We always do our very best to ensure that your plants are packed and shipped in the safest, gentlest and most effective way possible.

Will my plants and trees look like the photographs?

Absolutely! Unlike other online nurseries, our photos are of actual plants and trees we’ve grown here, on our family operated nursery.

our story Lloyd nurseryGrowing our own plants and trees helps to ensure we ship you the best quality plants that are free of pests and diseases.

Your plants and trees may however not ship with flowers on them, like the photographs. This all depends on the time of year you buy your plant or tree. Crape Myrtle trees, for example, only bloom during the summer months, so if you purchase one during the spring or fall, they would ship without flowers. Once planted, your plants will grow and thrive giving you flowers for many years to come!

Pot Sizes

Pot sizes (commonly referred to in gallons) are shipped in the same size nursery trade pots which may vary in actual volume. Some plants may have been at the approximate pot size listed, but require excess dirt to be removed so that you will not be paying any additional shipping costs. This doesn’t happen very often though.

The Thuja Green Giant prefers full sun or partial shade and fertile, moist and well-drained soil. It is reasonably tolerant of most average soil types however. The Green Giant is reasonably drought tolerant, but should be watered regularly until established. It can be planted as a standalone majestic focal point or as a hedge to form a dense visual, sound and wind barrier.

The Thuja grows very quickly once fully established, but large growth spurts may not be seen until the trees second or third year of growth. If utilizing as a hedge, space the trees’ centers 8 to 14 feet apart, depending on how tight of a barrier you hope to achieve. Tighter plantings will mean more shearing will be necessary to maintain shape and health, wider spacing will allow the tree to maintain it’s more natural pyramid shape.

Dig a hole approximately twice as wide as your new plant’s root ball and deep enough so that the top of the root ball is equal with the ground level.

Loosen the root ball using a small garden spade or by hand. Breaking smaller outer roots can encourage growth into the new soil, but take care to not damage large primary roots.

Place the plant in the hole and ensure that it is situated evenly upright. Use the excavated soil to fill in around the root ball, using your foot to pack it in firmly. Thoroughly soak with a hose as you fill in the dirt. Take great care to not leave any gaps or air spaces around the root ball as this could kill the plant.

A 2-4 inch layer of mulch is strongly recommended to help retain moisture and discourage weed growth. Apply mulch over the entire planting area but keep away from the stems or trunk by a few inches. Ensure that the plant and surrounding soil is completely soaked with water.

To ensure the proper nutrients are available for the life of your Thuja, our proprietary Perfect Plants Special Blend Soil and a once yearly application of Nutricote Total 360 Fertilizer are great considerations for your new plants!

The thuja’s were our idea of a ‘green fence’. After calling and speaking with Natalie on the phone, we made our purchase of the 5-6ft trees. They came in perfect packaged and healthy. This company did a great job growing such nice trees.

My neighbor had some Thuja Green Giants installed by a landscape company and was charged a fortune. Bought online with shipping was 1/2 the price he paid and I will install them myself. New to online plant shopping but they looked good coming out of their HUGE box.
