Enjoy Beautiful Blooms From Spring To Fall With Encore Autumn Twist Azaleas
This Autumn Twist™ Encore® Azalea shrub sports pale pink blooms with raspberry centers on a well-formed shrub with dark green foliage. Medium-sized and compact, it is an excellent plant for smaller spaces or sunnier spots that traditional azaleas would not like.
A member of the popular Encore® azalea line, this flowering shrub will rebloom, unlike traditional azaleas that only bloom once in spring. Azalea Twist blooms in mid-spring and again in late fall. Plant several different Encore® azaleas with various bloom times to have color throughout the warmer months.
Encore Azalea Autumn Twist™ makes standout specimen plantings, particularly when grown in front of a darker background like the edge of the woods or some arborvitaes. Evergreen foliage stays on the plant throughout the winter, providing color and screening.
This azalea Encore Twist is striking when planted in large groups, making a broad swath of colorful flowers in the landscape and softening corners and transitions in your yard.
Autumn Twist Azalea Care Information
Autumn Twist™ Encore Azalea evergreen is hardy to USDA zones 6-10. In the southern edges of its range, give it more shelter from the hot afternoon sun, and likewise, give it a few more rays if you live near the northern edge of its hardiness range.
If you live in zone 5 or 6, plant in a location sheltered from harsh winter winds and mulch the base of the plant well in the fall. You can also wrap it in burlap for the winter or bring it inside if you planted it in a container.
This azalea loves morning sun and will grow in full sun to partial shade. It will thrive in brighter spots than traditional azaleas.
Zone 9 or 10 gardeners should plant Autumn Twist™ in a location with some shade during the hottest part of the afternoon. Too much sun in southern areas may cause leaf scorching.
Loose, fertile, and well-drained organic soil is what these azaleas like. They grow best in acidic soil with a pH of 5.5 - 6.0. If you need to adjust the pH of your soil before planting your azaleas, you can lower it with garden sulfur or raise it (unlikely to be needed for azaleas) with lime.
Consider making a raised bed to plant these azaleas if you live in an area with frequent heavy rains or poor drainage.
Water deeply and regularly during the first growing season after transplanting. Once they are well-established, they should only require watering during prolonged dry periods.
If planting in a container, use any good-quality potting mix and add some perlite or coco coir to aid drainage and water retention. Keep an eye on pH in containers as well. Many potting mixes are neutral at 7.0 pH and may need to be adjusted.
Autumn Twist Azalea Size
A compact and well-behaved plant, Autumn Twist™ will be about 4-5 feet tall and 4 feet wide at maturity. Plants in containers can be kept smaller with pruning.
These compact plants do not need much pruning. Encore® azaleas don’t need to be deadheaded. A light pruning may be done after the spring flowering flush to maintain shape and encourage new growth.
