Easy to Grow Pear Tree Produces Prolific Fruit!

The Ayers Pear Tree, also known as the Sugar Pear tree, is reveled for being extra sweet and perfect for desserts!

In early spring, white flowers with a pink overtone are produced and invite pollinators such as bees and butterflies into the landscape to signal the start of the growing season. The colorful flowers eventually mature into small green fruits that will finally change to medium sized pear fruits.

The Ayers pear ripens to yellow with a red blush and turns soft on the tree if you allow it. Be ready to harvest the sugar pears late in the season around July or August depending on your location. For good storage purposes, pick the tree a few days before fully ripe and allow it to soften on your counter or dry storage.

The Ayers semi dwarf pear tree is a deciduous tree meaning it will lose its green leaves over fall and winter to become bare and prepare for dormancy.

Known as a dessert pear variety, you can only imagine the Ayers pear taste until you try it in person. With notes of vanilla and melting flesh, it has a delectable sweet taste to entice your tastebuds. Plant one in your garden today to bear fruit in the next 2-3 years!

AYERS PEAR TREE INFORMATION

Grow this fruit tree across the United States in USDA zones 5-9. All pear trees prefer well draining soil that is slightly acidic and rich in organic nutrients. However, it is adaptable to many soil types even clay soils. Water the tree thoroughly during the first year of planting to establish a strong root system.

A planting site with at least 6-8 hours of full sun is recommended for best fruit production.  It is the perfect variety of pear trees for southern states and it loves warm climates! The Ayers pear chill hour requirement is 300-400 hours.

Being very resistant to fire blight, you don’t have to worry about any diseases or pest problems with the Ayers sugar pear tree.

Ayers pear tree size is up to 15-20 feet tall and 10-15 feet wide at maturity. Its small compact size makes it perfect for small spaces in the garden! The tree grows vigorously and upright. The Ayers pear tree growth rate is up to 1-2 feet per year once established. We recommend spacing this pear tree at least 10 feet away from another tree.

Is Ayers Pear Self Pollinating?

Pyrus communis Ayers is not a completely self fertile variety of fruit tree. The blooms are partials self pollinating and will produce pears on their own with no pollinator nearby but having another pear tree at least 50 feet in distance away will give you more fruit to enjoy! Some good pollinator partners for cross pollination are Hood Pear, Kieffer Pear, or Orient Pear. Please check out the Pear Grow Guide to see an Ayers Pear pollination chart and more information on planting and growing your new European pear trees!
