The Cawtaba grape vine is a special variety of seeded grape known for its complex flavor and beautiful deep purple color. If you're looking to add this rare and exotic grape variety to your garden, here are some tips on buying, planting, and caring for the Cawtaba grapevine.

Sweet & Juicy Cawtaba Grapes

The Cawtaba grape vine is native to South Africa and is known for its dark purple coloring, juicy flesh, and thick skin. Its flavor profile features a tart mulberry-like flavor overlaid with a hint of black pepper. Often used in the production of wine and other beverages, the Cawtaba grape is prized for its sweet, complex taste.

Where and How To Plant a Catawba Vine

After purchasing your Cawtaba grapevine, it’s time to plant it! Depending on where you live and the type of soil you have available, select a planting location with at least 6 hours of sunlight and well-draining soil.

Clear out any excess vegetation around the planting location and mix aged compost with your soil. Dig an 18” deep hole and incorporate additional minerals into the bottom before inserting your rootstock.

Make sure to leave the graft union above the ground level and firmly pack down the soil around the base of your vine after filling in the hole. Finally, apply a thick layer of mulch around the base for moisture retention.

Pruning Techniques for Your Cawtaba Grape Vine

It is important to prune your Cawtaba vine correctly in order to ensure its long-term health and productivity. Pruning should always be done in the winter months when vines are dormant and you should use sharp, clean shears to remove any extra canes or deadwood. Make sure to not leave large stubs or damaged canes as these may cause infection on the vine. In the first year of having your vine, simply clip away excess shoots or dead buds, leaving about 8-12 main cane branches that will receive most of the energy. For subsequent years, make sure to thin out some of the old canes from previous seasons and keep an open shape with no crossing branches.
