Why Gardeners Love the Lavender Azalea Shrub
The Azalea Formosa Lavender features rich, lavender-pink blossoms with darker accented blotches that are large and showy. This evergreen shrub will bloom early spring to midseason on tall, upright plants. Sometimes a second flower bud will appear in early fall with fragrant red flowers. The large evergreen foliage of the plant will have colored blooms covering the deep dark green color to contrast nicely.
- Fast growth rate
- Evergreen foliage, perfect for year round interest
- Low maintenance and easy-to-grow
This fast-growing azalea bush is not deciduous and will keep its deep pink blossoms until the first frost. It is a spreading type plant that spreads from seed pods and can be planted in dappled shade. Its fast growth rate makes it very versatile to grow!
Lavender Formosa Care
We’ve grown thousands of these shrubs right here on our North Florida farm, and the good news is that once you get a few basics right, this plant pretty much takes care of itself. Here’s what we’ve learned from over 45 years of hands-on growing:
- Sunlight: The Lavender Formosa Azalea thrives in partial shade to filtered sun, and that's exactly where we tuck them in on our farm. Morning sun with afternoon shade is the sweet spot, especially in hotter southern climates where intense afternoon rays can stress the foliage and reduce blooming.
- Soil: This is the one thing we tell every single customer before they plant: azaleas are non-negotiable about their soil. They need well-drained, acidic soil with a pH between 4.5 and 6.0, and they will flat-out struggle in alkaline or compacted ground. If your soil isn't quite there, work in plenty of organic matter before planting and keep an eye out for yellowing leaves (chlorosis), which is the plant's way of telling you the pH is off.
- Watering: Water it deeply and consistently for that first growing season while it's establishing roots. Once it's settled in, it becomes much more self-sufficient, though it appreciates a good drink during dry spells, particularly in summer. Avoid overwatering or planting in low spots where water pools!
- Fertilizer: For slow-release food, feed your Lavender Azalea once in early spring, just before new growth pushes out. For continuous feeding, a great option would be to use our Liquid Azalea Fertilizer throughout spring.
Pro-Gardener Tip: Never prune your Formosa Azalea in the fall or winter. This is the single most common mistake we see, and it costs you your whole spring bloom because next year's flower buds set on the current season's wood. Do any shaping immediately after the spring blooms fade, and you'll go into the next season with everything intact.
