Sweet Tasting Fruit That's Easy to Grow in Home Gardens

The Hood Pear tree cultivar offers a sweet treat that is hard to resist on those hot summer days!

This Asian pear tree is a long-time favorite in the South due to the fruit’s buttery smooth textured yellow-green flesh. Pear flowers will appear in early spring. Hood pears ripen mid to late July and require a pollinator.

The pear fruit tree’s greenish-white fruit has a buttery smooth texture and a creamy white pulp. It is a sweet tasting, and crisp texture that is often found only in homegrown pear tree fruit.

How to Care for a Hood Pear Tree Bought Online

For the best results, plant in well-drained soil and full sun. As young trees, these pears need air circulation and plenty of water in the first year of planting to establish a strong root system.

The Hood Pear tree is fire blight resistant and grows well in the southeast region of the United States in USDA growing zones 8-10. Pick ripe fruit early so they are not susceptible to pests and diseases. A great fruit tree for the home gardener and orchardist alike!

Prune pears in late winter. In particular, prune crossing branches in the middle of the tree to make room for air and light circulation. Applying fertilizer annually at the top of the root ball will help produce more fruit. These trees have a strong central leader tree trunk at the graft union.

The standard size for this tree grows up to 30 feet tall and 15-20 feet wide. When in good health, the hood pear growth rate is up to 1-2 feet per year. It is very fast growing!

This tree does not require too many chill hours and does not do well in freezing temperatures giving it only slight cold hardiness. Perfect for the southern states.

Hood Pear Tree Pollination

For best fruit production, pick other pear varieties that bloom at the same time as the Hood pear. Cross-pollination is essential for most pear trees in the pyrus communis and pyrus pyrifolia species to produce fruit. Some good options for cross-pollinators are the Shinko Asian Pear or Kieffer Pear.
