Bright Pink Blooms that Open Up During Mid to Late Winter!

The Kanjiro Camellia shrub is a show-stopper in the landscape with gorgeous deep pink blooms and evergreen foliage that stays green all year long!

Camellia Sasanqua Kanjiro is a mid to late winter bloomer, producing magenta pink flowers that have overlapping petals and golden yellow stamens. The impressive winter flowers will contrast the dark green leaves nicely during the bloom period. The dark green foliage stays green all year long and doesn’t drop leaves as deciduous trees do. It will however drop the semi-double flowers when it is finished blooming to create a colorful ring around the base of the tree.

Best grown where it can be seen in the landscape, Camellia Kanjiro Pink can be planted in garden beds, as an evergreen shrub border or privacy hedge, as stand-alone trees, or in containers for small garden spaces. With the proper care and TLC, anyone can grow the Kanjiro Camellia and keep it thriving! We commonly see these bright pink camellias growing in woodland gardens, cottage gardens, or Japanese garden foundation plantings. They make excellent cut flowers!

CAMELLIA SASANQUA CARE

Kanjiro Camellia can be planted across the United States in USDA zones 7-10 and are cold hardy down to 0 F. They like being planted in partial shade to full sun. In warmer climates, a planting site with morning sun and afternoon shade is best to protect against the hot sunlight. Camellias like well draining and slightly acidic soil that is organically rich in nutrients. However, they are adaptable to a wide range of soil types. There are no significant pest or disease issues. Annual applications of mulch and fertilizer will help this type of camellia plant grow tall and strong, and keeps the plants healthy.

How to Plant Camellia Sasanqua Pink

Your new tree will come packaged in our signature black nursery containers with a root ball. We recommend planting within 2 weeks of receiving it to give it the best chance of acclimating into its new home. Dig a hole at least twice the size of the container and slide the root ball into the hole. Backfill with native soil or you can amend with our special blend Acidic Potting Soil. Press firmly around the root ball to ensure there are no air pockets. Water thoroughly the first year of planting to establish a strong root system. Cover the top of the root zone with a layer of mulch or organic matter to help retain moisture during the active growing seasons. Once the plant is established, it is drought tolerant.

How Far Apart to Plant Camellia Sasanqua Trees

This Camellia Sasanqua variety should be spaced at least 5-8 feet apart from other plants. If you are trying to create a camellia hedge or row, the optimum feet apart would be around 5 feet spaced so the small trees have room to grow to the fullest potential. The trees can grow up to 6-8 feet tall and wide at maturity.

When Do Sasanqua Camellias Bloom?

The camellia sasanqua flowering period will vary depending on your location and the weather. This species of camellia variety is a mid-season bloomer meaning you can see fall blooms from November to January. The bloom time is exceptionally long compared to other species and it puts on a grand display for all to witness.

When to Trim Sasanqua Camellias

The best time to trim sasanqua camellias is after they have finished flowering in spring. This will allow the camellia tree to regrow new branches, leaves, and medium-sized flower buds all season long to prepare for the next blooming season. If you cut too late in summer or fall you can risk cutting off the large flower heads. You can prune the Kanjiro Camellia to maintain the desired shape and height as needed. They have an upright growth habit so be sure to keep that in mind.

When to Fertilize Sasanqua Camellia?

The best time to fertilize camellias is through spring and summer to provide adequate nutrients while the plant is producing flowers. An all-purpose fertilizer or acidic fertilizer works best for these acid-loving plants.
