Purple Foliage Lasts All Year & Contrasts Bright Pink Flowers in Spring

A larger sized member of the Loropetalum family, the rich burgundy foliage of the Loropetalum Zhuzhou Shrub makes a striking statement.

Chinese Fringe Flower shrub, as it is commonly called, can be used as a privacy hedge, border planting, or small multi trunk evergreen tree bringing a burst of color to your landscape any time of the year!

Loropetalum chinense green leaves turn dark burgundy to deep purple black throughout spring and fall. In early spring, stacked fuchsia Chinese fringe-like blooms appear which gives it the nickname Fringe Flower. The bright pink fringe flowers light up their landscapes during the spring growing season.

This evergreen shrub is such a pretty sight! The dark maroon foliage contrasts the hot pink flowers perfectly and stays dark for most of the year. Most elegantly seen as a tall hedge or screen, or used as a foundation planting or mass planting. Our favorite way to grow it is as a zhuzhou loropetalum tree!

Zhuzhou Loropetalum hedge is happiest in full sun to partial shade and soil that is moist and well-drained soils. It prefers acidic soils so the addition of acidic planting mix will help your fast growing shrub!

It grows to a mature height between 10-15 feet tall and a spread of 6-8 feet wide. The Zhuzhou Loropetalum tree growth rate is moderate. This large loropetalum zhuzhou is conveniently low maintenance and drought-resistant once established.

Grows best across the United States in USDA zones 7-10. Zhuzhou fuchsia can be pruned into a small tree form making it the Chinese Fringe tree.

Water the Chinese fringe tree root system thoroughly before, during, and after planting to establish healthy growth.

The fast-growing nature, eye catching red flowers and evergreen foliage of the loropetalum, and low maintenance qualities make this shrub a great choice for any landscape!

Loropetalum is easy to grow, adds color all year long, and are quality plants to have in any landscape!

Shipping information

Once your Loropetalum Zhuzhou Chinese Fringe Flower Shrub order is placed, we will ship your plant(s) within seven business days year round unless during the checkout process you request otherwise in the space provided to do so.

Perfect Plants’ shipping specialists carefully package your plants using a proven packaging method that ensures your plants arrive healthy, colorfully alive and ready to flourish. We’ve coined the term ‘upside down box test’ and we do just that; we carefully package so that regardless of the direction your box is handled, it will not harm your precious plant that’s inside.

No shipping process is without a problem from time to time. On rare occasions some plants may experience some of the following during their transit: drooping, minor leaf-loss and/or minimal yellowing/discoloration, minor limb damage, etc. These instances are quite rare, but can happen when shipping plants in boxes.

Plants normally recover within a few weeks after planting. If a damaged box has injured your plant on the inside, please notify us within 5 days of receiving you package(s) by emailing us a photograph of the damage.

We always do our very best to ensure that your plants are packed and shipped in the safest, gentlest and most effective way possible.

Will my plants and trees look like the photographs?

Absolutely! Unlike other online nurseries, our photos are of actual plants and trees we’ve grown here, on our family operated nursery.

Growing our own plants and trees helps to ensure we ship you the best quality plants that are free of pests and diseases.

Your plants and trees may however not ship with flowers on them, like the photographs. This all depends on the time of year you buy your plant or tree. Crape Myrtle trees, for example, only bloom during the summer months, so if you purchase one during the spring or fall, they would ship without flowers. Once planted, your plants will grow and thrive giving you flowers for many years to come!

Pot Sizes

Pot sizes (commonly referred to in gallons) are shipped in the same size nursery trade pots which may vary in actual volume. Some plants may have been at the approximate pot size listed, but require excess dirt to be removed so that you will not be paying any additional shipping costs. This doesn’t happen very often though.

Shipping Fees

Our shipping charges are based on the value of your order.  Please use the chart below to see what your shipping charge will be.

The Zhuzhou Loropetalum or Chinese Fringe Tree prefers full sun or partial shade and moist but well-drained soil. These fairly fast growing shrubs are one of the tallest of the Loropetalums and are versatile in their use. They will keep an upright bushy shape naturally, but need regular pruning to be maintained as a formal shape and to promote fresh growth.

Loropetalums are also commonly pruned to a small, multi-trunked tree form by removing their lower small branches. A pruning just after flowering is recommended to avoid shearing off the following year’s flowers that develop quickly after the current blossoms fade. Avoid fall pruning, as frost will damage the new growth.

The centers of this Loropetalum should be planted 8 or more feet apart to create a hedgerow.

Dig a hole approximately twice as wide as your new plant’s root ball and deep enough so that the top of the root ball is equal with the ground level.

Loosen the root ball using a small garden spade or by hand. Breaking smaller outer roots can encourage growth into the new soil, but take care to not damage large primary roots.

Place the plant in the hole and ensure that it is situated evenly upright. Use the excavated soil to fill in around the root ball, using your foot to pack it in firmly. Thoroughly soak with a hose as you fill in the dirt. Take great care to not leave any gaps or air spaces around the root ball as this could kill the plant.

A 2-4 inch layer of mulch is strongly recommended to help retain moisture and discourage weed growth. Apply mulch over the entire planting area but keep away from the stems or trunk by a few inches. Ensure that the plant and surrounding soil is completely soaked with water.

To ensure the proper nutrients are available for the life of your Zhuzhou Loropetalum, our proprietary Perfect Plants Special Blend Soil and a once yearly application of Nutricote Total 360 Fertilizer are great considerations for your new plants!

The best purchase in plants ever. The plants were very healthy, and bigger than I was expecting. These plants were very well taken care of. They arrived in a box, however, they arrived in perfect condition. Will buy from Perfect Plants again.

It's everything I wanted and more!

Arrived in excellent condition. I have seen new growth already.

The staff at Perfect Plants was very helpful and friendly. The shrub arrived with only 1 broken branch. But we were disappointed in that the plant was not pruned up as I was promised, and it looked very old, like it had been in the pot for a long, long time. We got it in the ground right away and have been watering as instructed. It is getting some new leaves now and we are hoping it will perk up and become the small tree we were looking for.
