New Age Lavender Syringa is Compact & Mildew-Resistant

Enjoy pleasant fragrance and easy care in a small flowering shrub form

  • Full-sized, deliciously fragrant lavender purple blooms on a plant that only reaches 4 to 5 feet tall and wide
  • Flowers perfect for DIY flower arrangements
  • Bred for noticeably better resistance to powdery mildew than older, classic lilac varieties
  • Reliably cold hardy in USDA zones 4 through 7, where winter chill triggers heavy spring flowering
  • Dense, upright growth habit that's perfect for hedges, borders, foundation plantings, and patio accents

If you've ever wanted a lilac but didn't have the space (or patience) for a leggy, mildew-prone old-timer, the New Age™ Lavender Lilac is the one we point folks toward at Perfect Plants. This modern Syringa vulgaris selection was bred to solve the two biggest gripes about classic lilacs: size and powdery mildew. You still get those full-sized, sweetly fragrant lavender purple flower clusters everyone remembers from grandma's yard, just packed onto a tidy 4 to 5 foot frame that's dense, well-behaved, and a lot easier to find a spot for.

How to Care for New Age Lavender Lilac

This is a low fuss shrub once you get the basics right, and most of those basics come down to giving it the sun and drainage it asks for.

  • Plant in full sun, ideally 6 to 8 hours of direct light a day. Good sun exposure means more blooms and helps foliage dry out quickly, which keeps mildew pressure even lower.
  • Give it well drained soil that's neutral to slightly alkaline. If you're working with heavy clay, mix in some compost or plant on a slightly raised mound so roots never sit in soggy soil.
  • Water deeply a couple times a week through the first one to two growing seasons while the root system establishes. After that, mature plants handle dry spells reasonably well, though a little extra moisture before and during spring bloom keeps flowers fuller.
  • Feed with a general purpose fertilizer in early spring as new growth starts.
  • Prune right after flowering finishes, since this lilac sets next year's buds on the current season's wood. Pruning later in the year means cutting off next spring's blooms.

Why You'll Love This Lilac

The New Age™ Lavender Lilac earns its keep in the landscape well beyond bloom season. Its deep green, densely packed foliage stays attractive and full all summer, and the compact, rounded form means it doesn't need constant shaping to look good. Come spring, it puts on a real show, with upright flower clusters loaded with dozens of tiny, intensely fragrant blooms that pollinators can't resist and that make beautiful cut flowers for the house.

  • Sweetly fragrant lavender purple blooms that fill the air every spring
  • Compact 4 to 5 foot size fits small yards, foundation beds, and containers where old-fashioned lilacs never could
  • Attracts bees, butterflies, and other pollinators while flowering
  • Improved powdery mildew resistance for cleaner looking foliage all season
  • Versatile in the landscape, from a single specimen by the patio to a flowering hedge along the property line

FAQs for New Age™ Lavender Lilac

Prune right after the spring flowers fade, typically within a few weeks of bloom. This lilac forms its buds for next year on the current season's growth, so pruning in summer, fall, or winter will remove flower buds before they ever get the chance to open.

Its compact 4 to 5 foot size makes it a good candidate for a large container on a patio or entryway, as long as the pot has excellent drainage and enough room for the root system to develop. Container grown lilacs do need a bit more attention to watering and winter protection in colder zones compared to those planted in the ground.

It 100% is a butterfly magnet! Planting just one of these purple flowering shrubs is a sure fire way to attract all sorts of friendly garden pollinators to your yard such as butterflies, honey bees, and hummingbirds!

Yes, they are the same thing and the names can be used interchangeably. Lilac is the common name used amongst the average gardener while "syringa" is the official scientific name used for classification.
