The Oconee Pecan tree is best known for its excellent yield potential when compared to other pecan cultivars. Grows great as a backyard tree!

This Carya illinoinensis pecan variety will yield around 48 nuts per pound with 53% kernel. The pecan nuts are robust and tend to grow in clusters. Oconee’s shells are easy to break open and keep intact halves, allowing you to have a taste of the delicious nut right away.

Please note the large nut size of the tree appears with age. The older the tree, the larger and more high quality of the nuts the tree produces! The time of year for harvest date is in the fall in October. Pecan nuts will appear after the 5th year.

Oconee Pecan Tree Information

The Oconee is a fairly low-maintenance tree and is moderately resistant to scab and disease resistant in most environments. It is resistant to pecan phylloxera disease. It is a cross-selection from Schley x barton and was released in 1989.

Oconee is a Type 1 pollinator and should be pollinated with Type 2 pecan trees like Elliot Pecan or Kanza Pecan. Pecan tree pollination is important for producing large bushels of nuts year after year.

It can grow up to 70-100 feet tall and has a 70-foot branch spread as a mature tree. Plant pecan trees in full sun to partial shade in moist and well-drained soil. They have an extremely fast growth rate and make great shade trees.

Grow this pecan tree across the United States in USDA growing zones 6-9. Water extensively the first year of planting to establish a strong root system. A slow release fertilizer at the top of the root ball helps stimulate growth.

These are not bare-root trees. These are shipped in a container rooted in soil.
