THUJA GREEN GIANT CARE
The thujas hardiness zones are best in the department of agriculture plant hardiness zones 5-9 across the United States. This landscaping tree performs best in moist, fertile, well-drained soil conditions in full sun to partial shade. Ideal conditions for the giant Thuja tree are at least 4-6 hours of sun per day. This large tree cannot handle wet sites or poorly drained soil types like heavy clay because of the possibility of root rot.
The Thuja Green Giant Arborvitae growth rate is extremely fast! It can grow up to 3-5 feet per year once established, and it can quickly reach a height up to 40 feet tall and 20 feet wide at maturity. As young plants, they grow faster during the spring and summer growing season more than any other season.
Slow-release fertilizers at the base of the root ball will help give this tree the boost it needs in early spring. The emerald green needles may darken or bronze slightly in winter. If the leaves turn brown you may have a different issue such as lack of watering.
Newly planted trees need lots of water and a thick layer of mulch to help retain moisture and protect the roots. Water your trees a few times a week, especially during the summer months when temperatures are hotter. The root system will establish after 1 year if watered thoroughly. After 1 year of fast growth, it is fairly drought tolerant.
The best time to plant Thuja Green Giant shrubs is in early spring so the trees have the whole growing season to establish before the ice and snow of winter come. Dig a hole the size of the root ball and don’t plant too close! Thuja Green Giant hedges will establish quickly and provide the privacy you need.
Planting Thuja Green Giant Plants
Wondering how far apart to plant arborvitae? Thuja Green Giant spacing should be planted at least 5-15 feet apart because of their girth and length. This will leave plenty of room to grow! Some use it as a screen plant or hedging plant to line a fence in their yard in a straight row of trees. You can also do it in a double row spacing as long as you have a wide area so they can reach their mature width.
Bushier than our Leyland Cypresses, but still the same Christmas tree like form. You can prune your Thuja tree into a shorter hedge for a single row spaced and keep the height at 12 to 15 feet tall if desired. They can tolerate heavy shearing and we encourage pruning to promote new growth.

Will my plants and trees look like the photographs?
Absolutely! Unlike other online nurseries, our photos are of actual plants and trees we’ve grown here, on our family operated nursery.
Growing our own plants and trees helps to ensure we ship you the best quality plants that are free of pests and diseases.
Your plants and trees may however not ship with flowers on them, like the photographs. This all depends on the time of year you buy your plant or tree. Crape Myrtle trees, for example, only bloom during the summer months, so if you purchase one during the spring or fall, they would ship without flowers. Once planted, your plants will grow and thrive giving you flowers for many years to come!
Pot sizes (commonly referred to in gallons) are shipped in the same size nursery trade pots which may vary in actual volume. Some plants may have been at the approximate pot size listed, but require excess dirt to be removed so that you will not be paying any additional shipping costs. This doesn’t happen very often though.
Our shipping charges are based on the value of your order and the destination it is being shipped. Please see the chart on the Shipping Info page to get an exact amount. We frequently have a free shipping promotion to help you save!
THUJA GREEN GIANT CARE:
The Thuja Green Giant prefers full sun or partial shade and fertile, moist and well-drained soil. It is reasonably tolerant of most average soil types however. The Green Giant is reasonably drought tolerant, but should be watered regularly until established. It can be planted as a standalone majestic focal point or as a hedge to form a dense visual, sound and wind barrier.
The Thuja grows very quickly once fully established, but large growth spurts may not be seen until the trees second or third year of growth. If utilizing as a hedge, space the trees’ centers 8 to 14 feet apart, depending on how tight of a barrier you hope to achieve. Tighter plantings will mean more shearing will be necessary to maintain shape and health, wider spacing will allow the tree to maintain it’s more natural pyramid shape.
Dig a hole approximately twice as wide as your new plant’s root ball and deep enough so that the top of the root ball is equal with the ground level.
Loosen the root ball using a small garden spade or by hand. Breaking smaller outer roots can encourage growth into the new soil, but take care to not damage large primary roots.
Place the plant in the hole and ensure that it is situated evenly upright. Use the excavated soil to fill in around the root ball, using your foot to pack it in firmly. Thoroughly soak with a hose as you fill in the dirt. Take great care to not leave any gaps or air spaces around the root ball as this could kill the plant.
A 2-4 inch layer of mulch is strongly recommended to help retain moisture and discourage weed growth. Apply mulch over the entire planting area but keep away from the stems or trunk by a few inches. Ensure that the plant and surrounding soil is completely soaked with water.
To ensure the proper nutrients are available for the life of your Thuja, our proprietary Perfect Plants Special Blend Soil and a once yearly application of Nutricote Total 360 Fertilizer are great considerations for your new plants!

Great. Plants were healthy and exactly as described.
Excellent all around!
I bought 128 trees to plant along my property line. They arrived quickly, well packaged, and in great shape. It has only been a couple of weeks, but they are all doing well at this point. I will buy from here again!
Just like the sign on the door says - PERFECT
My expectations were blown out of the water when my 8 Thujas arrived. I was expecting little 1 to 2ft sticks wrapped in moist paper. Instead, I got 8 healthy 2 ft tall and very green trees potted and well protected. The trees are producing new growth already and looking very healthy. I'm sold. My next tree order will be with Perfect Plants.
Hey Keith, Thank you so much for the lovely review on our Thuja Green Giants we can't wait to have you back! We hope that your trees continue to grow big and strong and very lush. Best, Shirley
Healthy evergreen plants
I'm replacing Leyland Cypress trees with these. They do better in snowfall, I lost 4 Leylands in the last snow. These trees provide privacy, look pretty, and are hardy.
Hey James, Thank you for purchasing our Thuja Green Giant Trees and for the awesome review! They are most definitely very good, hardy, privacy trees. Best Shirley
