One of the absolute favorite border plants among gardeners. The hardy Variegated Liriope Shrub cultivar can tolerate a variety of soil and environmental conditions and are incredibly easy to maintain!
This charming plant hosts variegated dark green and white leaves striped with creamy yellow and beautiful violet-blue flowers in the mid-summer. The liriope Muscari Variegata lavender flower spikes are similar to those of grape hyacinth.
Following the purple flowers are blue-black berries that appear in the fall. The tall green leaves of the variegated liriope plants are also known as monkey grass as all members of the liriope family are called as a nickname. Creeping lilyturf helps with erosion control and fills spots where no other plants can seem to grow.
The more sun the liriope variegata is exposed to the brighter the overall colors will be. Just make sure it is not too much full sun or too intense heat exposure or else slight browning of the leaf tips can occur. The vibrant yellow stripes add color and act as a huge statement piece during the growing season.
VARIEGATED LIRIOPE CARE
Quick Summary: Plant in partial to full shade, water consistently the first year, fertilize once each spring, and cut back old foliage in late winter. One of the easiest groundcovers you can grow.
The Variegated lilyturf is exceptionally versatile and will thrive in full sunlight to shady locations. The edging plant prefers rich, moist, and slightly acidic soil, but will adapt to a wide variety of soil types. Keep moist but well drained.
-
Watering: Water thoroughly and consistently throughout the first year to establish a strong root system. Once established, the plant is fairly drought tolerant and requires occasional watering during dry periods.
-
Fertilizing: Apply a slow-release fertilizer once a year in early spring to boost growth and support strong flowering through the season.
-
Sun and Shade: Thrives in full sun to full shade. Partial shade to full shade in the afternoon is preferred, especially in warmer climates. More sun exposure will produce brighter foliage color, but watch for tip browning if conditions become too intense.
-
Soil: Prefers slightly acidic, rich, and moist soil but adapts to a wide range of conditions including clay, sandy, and compacted soils.
