Grow Clusters of Sweet Concord Grapes for Wine, Juice, or Jelly!

The Concord Grape Vine is one of the best fruiting vines for home gardeners to grow due to its high yield and easy maintenance.

Vitis labrusca 'Concord', as it is botanically named, takes 2-4 years to bear fruit but it is worth the wait! The vines produce clusters of medium-sized grapes that are bluish-black in color and ripen in mid-September.

Concord Grape Vines produce dainty flowers in spring that attract pollinators. The green foliage stays on the plant year-round under temperatures drop. In Autumn, the grape leaves change to beautiful shades of fall colors.

When Are Concord Grapes in Season?

The Concord Grape season is in the fall after the heat of summer cools down.

How to Grow Concord Grapes?

A Concord Grape trellis is needed to help maintain and support the vines and keep them off the ground. Space the vines at least 4-6 feet apart for best results and air circulation.

The Concord Grape growing zones are 4-9 across the United States in USDA zones. It needs full sun to produce the most fruit.

At mature size, the vines grow 5-6 feet tall with an 8-10 foot wide spread. They have an extremely fast growth rate and prolific fruit-bearing ability.

The best fertilizer for Concord Grape is our Slow Release Fertilizer to help supplement nutrients missing and jumpstart growth in spring.

Grapes prefer slightly acidic soil that is well draining and full of organic matter and nutrients to provide an excellent environment to grow. Water the plant well in the first year of planting to establish a strong root system.

Concord grape is self-fertile but you will have a more fruitful crop if more than one vine is planted.

How to Prune Concord Grapes?

Pruning Concord Grapes is essential to keeping your vines healthy, vigorous, and issue free. The best time to prune is in late winter or early spring while dormant so the vines have the whole growing season to establish and grow to their normal size.

Concord grapes require cane pruning. Prune back any old or non-producing wood from the previous years growth. Cut back any suckers or side shoots to help promote upward growth to follow along the route of the trellis support system. Keep the strongest shoot when pruning the vines to encourage vigorous growth.

Practice these pruning techniques annually to help control size and production. Your blue black grapes will thank you!

Benefits of Growing Concord Grapes

There are many Concord Grape benefits including being heart healthy, containing antioxidants and polyphenols, and having high vitamin C which in turn boosts your immune system.

Homemade Concord Grape jelly is one traditional way to use these tasty grape fruits in your kitchen! It makes the most delicious peanut butter and jelly sandwich you will ever eat. You can also eat them fresh off the vine for a healthy snack as a table grape!
