The American Chestnut has a consistent yield every year of large sweet nuts that are commonly used to feed wildlife such as deer, squirrels, wild turkeys, and bears. It is the very best tree for attracting deer and wildlife into your yard or landscape. American forests used to be loaded with Chestnuts that were plentiful for the wildlife to snack on. When Chinese Chestnut trees were introduced into our landscapes during the early 19th century, a susceptibility to blight occurred and killed many of the edible chestnut forests. These genetically engineered nut trees allowed for resistance to the blight and restored chestnut seedlings to pop up all over where they once grew across North America!
These sweet tasting nuts are perfect for fresh eating right off the tree, roasting, or for attracting animals. Plant these large trees in a grove or have a few specimen trees in your fruit and nut orchard. The trees will bear fruit in 1-3 years after planting. It is one of the most sought after and high demand nut trees in the US.
GROWING AMERICAN CHESTNUT TREES
Grow chestnut trees across the United States in USDA zones 5-9. It can thrive in a variety of areas and planting sites. The native tree prefers moist, well draining soil and should be planted in full sun for best nut production. The American Chestnut hybrid cannot tolerate wet soil sites.
The tree grows with a central leader up to 40-60 feet tall and 30-40 feet wide as a mature American chestnut tree. They are easy to grow and can produce 20 lbs of nuts per tree after only 10 years, and as much as 50-100 lbs per tree at maturity. It is one of the best producing chestnut trees in America!
Water the American Chestnut trees well the first year of planting to establish a strong root system. They need lots of water to produce nuts as yearly crops. These are not bare root chestnut trees and are already rooted in pots with soil.
