ENJOY BEAUTIFUL, FRAGRANT FLOWERS IN THE SPRING
Chionanthus virginicus, more commonly known as the native White Fringe Tree, is a North American native tree with showy white flowers in the spring.
The American White Fringe tree puts out spring flowers that are creamy white in color and slightly fragrant. Often seen blooming in late spring and signaling the start of early summer, the fragrant flowers attract pollinators and contrast the dark green foliage perfectly. Being a deciduous tree, you will see gorgeous yellow fall color when the temperatures start to drop and right before the spear shaped leaves drop for winter to go into dormancy.
Female trees will produce dark blue berries in the winter that are an excellent food source for birds and wildlife.
Grow in clusters to accentuate the unique flowers or as single specimens in woodland gardens or native gardens. The White Fringe tree Chionanthus virginicus is highly tolerant of air pollutants and is perfect for urban areas like city parks, sidewalks, or parking lots. The white flowers will make a statement in your front yard that makes neighbors say WOW!
NATIVE WHITE FRINGE TREE CARE
Grow the native fringe tree across the United States in USDA growing zones 3-9. It prefers well drained soil that is rich in nutrients and kept moist although it is adaptable to many soil types. Full sun to partial shade is best for this flowering tree to shoot out spring blooms. Chionanthus virginicus is also salt tolerant and a good choice for coastal plantings.
The mature size can reach 12 to 20 feet tall and wide making it perfect for small gardens. This ornamental tree requires very little pruning only to maintain the desired size and shape of your liking. Prune dead or crossed branches to encourage new growth. Fringe tree spacing should be at least 5-10 feet apart when planting in groups.
Be sure to water your newly planted tree thoroughly for the first year of planting to establish a strong root system. They are versatile in the landscape but do not tolerate dry spells. Adding a treegator watering system may be helpful if you are not good with watering schedules.
The White Fringe Tree’s fall color and beautiful flowers are just two of the many reasons why we love it!
