Make Your Neighbors Say WOW With This Showstopping Hydrangea Tree!

If you really want to add an ‘awe’ factor to your landscape, the Limelight Hydrangea tree form is exactly what you need!

The Limelight Hydrangea paniculata in tree form raises its enormous, beautiful creamy white flowers at eye level, making it impossible to miss! The flowers begin a soft lime green, fading into a graceful white in the mid-summer with hints of pink, red, and burgundy in fall as the white blooms age.

The cone-shaped flowers of the panicle hydrangea shrub will stand out amongst others to its rounded nature and beautiful colors. Growing hydrangea trees makes a true statement piece in your yard!

The Lime Hydrangea tree features deep, rich green foliage all season long with pointy green leaves. The dark green foliage contrasts the lime green flowers nicely during the full bloom time.

This deciduous dwarf tree has a coarse texture allowing it to stand apart from other flowering shrubs in your landscape. The Limelight plant is an excellent choice for any flower garden, it is easy to grow, and makes excellent cut flower clusters for arrangements or bouquets.

Limelight Hydrangea Pruning

The best time to prune the limelight hydrangea is late winter to early spring when the tree has finished blooming and before new growth begins. Similar to most panicle hydrangeas, limelight hydrangea blooms on new wood so any pruning should be done before new growth starts.

When pruning, you can remove any dead wood and broken branches but avoid pruning its flower heads or celadon green flowers on the hydrangea blooms. You can also cut back mature stems by about ⅓ if they’re drooping or weighing down.

As pruning the Limelight Hydrangea tree won't make it bloom again or more,  only prune to help shape it however you would like. Some like to shape it into a hydrangea topiary tree, but feel free to do what works best for your garden.

Limelight Hydrangea Bloom Time

You can expect hydrangeas to bloom from mid-spring to the late summer, and sometimes through to the early fall. Hydrangeas, including the Limelight Paniculata, are considered long bloomers and will continue to after other flowering plants have stopped blooming.

It’s worth noting that deadheading or pruning hydrangeas will not make them bloom again. As with most flowering hydrangeas, once the blooming starts, hydrangeas will keep flowering for around 2 weeks.

Limelight Hydrangea Care & Watering

The Limelight Paniculata can be grown in almost every United States location and is very cold hardy. Grow the limelight hydrangea tree all across North America in USDA hardiness zones 3 through 9.

The main thing to know when caring for Limelight Hydrangea trees is to water them regularly. Watering the Limelight Hydrangea helps keep its flowers and leaves hydrated and lush. Be sure not to overwater your Limelight Hydrangea tree as that can cause root rot if the soil isn't well-draining.

Where To Plant Limelight Hydrangea

The Limelight tree can grow in both partial shade and full sun conditions and prefers moist, well-drained soil types. Hydrangea Paniculata prefer slightly acidic soil with a soil pH between 5-6. The perfect planting site is one with morning sun and afternoon shade, bright indirect light is best.

When To Plant Limelight Hydrangea

The best time to plant the hydrangea trees is in early spring or fall. Planting a Limelight Hydrangea is easy! To plant a limelight hydrangea tree start by choosing a planting site with full sun, or partial sun if you’re plating in a warmer climate. Dig a hole as deep as the root ball and twice as wide. This will give space for the roots to grow.

Backfill the hole with well-draining soil and water it in to help the tree establish itself. Once established it makes the perfect small tree for your yard!

How Fast Do Limelight Hydrangeas Grow?

This white hydrangea tree size will reach around 10 feet tall at maturity with a 5 foot wide branch spread. The tree form Limelight Hydrangea growth rate is very rapid. The fast-growing tree can grow up to 1-2 feet per year.

This large paniculata flowering tree will ship at a height of 3-4 feet from the top of the root ball on a sturdy central leader stem as it is already trained to grow as a small ornamental tree.

You can also grow the Limelight hydrangea as shrub. The Limelight Hydrangea bush is much smaller than a full-grown hydrangea tree and can fit much easier in gardens and landscapes with less available space.

Fertilizer For Limelight Hydrangea

Fertilize with a slow release fertilizer or plant food at the top of the root ball in early spring to jumpstart flowering. Allow soil to dry in between waterings for the best results. Apply mulch around the root system to help retain moisture and protect the roots during winter.

Limelight hydrangea tree

We received our tree in a timely manner. One criticism I would have is the yellow leaves that were on the tree along with some broken limbs.

Great Experience and Customer Service

I purchased 2 of these limelight hydrangeas trees last year during the month of July and they were a little stressed due to shipping and the heat. I reached out to customer service and they told me not to worry but sent me a slow release fertilizer to help with the shock. I didn’t think they would bounce back and for the rest of the season, they looked pitiful. However, I decided to trust the process and advice that was given by customer service to just wait until the following spring to see how they would respond and I’m so happy that I did. They are stunning, full of blooms and extremely healthy. I would definitely purchase again because my experience has been fantastic. If they arrive stressed and in shock, give it time even if you need to wait until the next season….they will come back beautiful and better than ever. Make sure to fertilize every spring but I’m certain you will not be disappointed.

Lovely specimen

It arrived one of the hottest days we've had & appeared quite stressed by the travel. After consistent watering & removing dried leaves it is bouncing back from its travels & is producing some brilliant blossoms. Perfect size for the spot in my garden I intended it to reside. Overall a positive experience.
