Unique in its shape and color, this delightful Forest Pansy Redbud tree will add a striking, almost whimsical appeal to your landscape design.

The purple flowering tree is a fully leaved cultivar of the Missouri-native redbud tree. It is a small, deciduous tree featuring a spreading, flat-to-rounded crown, and can eventually grow to 20-30 feet high.

The Forest pansy redbud tree’s clusters of tiny, rosy purple pea-like pink flowers grow profusely on the branches and mature trunks of the planted tree for 2-3 weeks in the early spring growing season. Then the heart shaped leaves and foliage emerges. The blooms are a more intense rose-purple than common eastern redbud.

The new foliage on this small to medium sized tree emerges red-purple, eventually fading to a purplish-green later in the season. The flowering tree’s purple leaves turn pale yellow to greenish-yellow in fall, providing nearly year round interest with mesmerizing fall color.

This landscape tree prefers well drained soil but can thrive in a variety of soil types. It grows best in full sun to part shade and requires a lot of watering the first year to establish a strong root system.

Will my plants and trees look like the photographs?

Absolutely! Unlike other online nurseries, our photos are of actual plants and trees we’ve grown here, on our family operated nursery.

Your plants and trees may however not ship with flowers on them, like the photographs. This all depends on the time of year you buy your plant or tree. Crape Myrtle trees, for example, only bloom during the summer months, so if you purchase one during the spring or fall, they would ship without flowers. Once planted, your plants will grow and thrive giving you flowers for many years to come!

Pot Sizes

Pot sizes (commonly referred to in gallons) are shipped in the same size nursery trade pots which may vary in actual volume. Some plants may have been at the approximate pot size listed, but require excess dirt to be removed so that you will not be paying any additional shipping costs. This doesn’t happen very often though.

Care

FOREST PANSY REDBUD CARE:

The Forest Pansy is adaptable to most average soil types. It is tolerant of reasonable drought or slightly soggy soils, although well-drained, moist soil is ideal for growth. It should be watered regularly until established. The Forest Pansy does well in part sun or part shade, but afternoon shade during the heat of summer especially in Southern climates is appreciated.

Pruning is necessary to avoid weak structure. Remove any branches greater than ½ the diameter of the main trunk and those that form strong V-shaped angles, as these are more likely to break. Prune during winter dormancy to control size and shape, prune as soon as flowers fade to promote further flowering and growth.

PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS:

Dig a hole approximately twice as wide as your new plant’s root ball and deep enough so that the top of the root ball is equal with the ground level.

Loosen the root ball using a small garden spade or by hand. Breaking smaller outer roots can encourage growth into the new soil, but take care to not damage large primary roots.

Place the plant in the hole and ensure that it is situated evenly upright. Use the excavated soil to fill in around the root ball, using your foot to pack it in firmly. Thoroughly soak with a hose as you fill in the dirt. Take great care to not leave any gaps or air spaces around the root ball as this could kill the plant.

A 2-4 inch layer of mulch is strongly recommended to help retain moisture and discourage weed growth. Apply mulch over the entire planting area but keep away from the stems or trunk by a few inches. Ensure that the plant and surrounding soil is completely soaked with water.
