This easy-to-grow oak is perfect for a beautiful, low maintenance shade tree.
The Nuttall oak tree is prized for its fall color as well, in mid to late fall its lobed leaves will turn bright red before being shed. The fast growing habit of this tree is magnificent! This vase shaped fast growing tree is one of our favorite species of oaks and nut trees that grow in North America.
Its acorns are a favorite among wildlife such as ducks, deer, and squirrels! The tree’s acorns in it’s upper branches will begin to ripen in autumn in their second year and are dark brown in color. Acorn production will increase year after year.
The Nuttall is adaptable to a wide range of soil but prefers loamy, well-drained soil and full sun. The oak trees can even tolerate poorly drained areas (it adjusts to wet soil) more than any other red oak cultivar and will grow profusely as a young tree.
Its fast growth rate is up to 2-4 feet per year. The Nuttall’s mature size is up to 60 feet tall over 20 years and 80 feet at maturity. The tree will flower in April and May.
Grow this oak quercus in United States department of agriculture plant hardiness zones 5-9.
