Stunning, Low-Maintenance Blooms with Oakleaf Hydrangea

Oakleaf Hydrangea Thrives in Shade and Delivers Long-Lasting Cone-Shaped Flowers

Enjoy dramatic, cone-shaped white blooms and vibrant fall foliage with the Oakleaf Hydrangea. This easy-care native shrub thrives in partial shade, needs minimal pruning, and offers year-round visual interest—from summer flowers to fiery autumn color.

The Oakleaf Hydrangea bush is a native plant that gets its name from its beautiful large, shaped leaves, which are accented by its dramatic white flower blooms that will stay on the plant for months. The Oak leaf hydrangea’s white blooming flower buds appear in cone-shaped clusters throughout the growing season.

It has excellent fall foliage! This hydrangea is native to the Southeast United States & produces huge cone shaped blooms. The hydrangea shrub’s dark green leaves turn red-orange with attractive shades of red bronze, crimson, or purple while the flowers turn a shade of pink. These color changes happen before the shrub loses its leaves in winter. The leaves are large and oblong, they can grow up to 8 inches long.

This hardy Hydrangea quercifolia shrub grows up to 6-8 feet tall and wide. The Oakleaf hydrangea flower clusters grow on a 12 inch long stem. The Oakleaf hydrangea size will grow in the space you plant it in. If you have a small space or container this will work for the plant. Looks great in woodland gardens too because it is shade loving.

Pruning Oakleaf Hydrangea

This elegant oakleaf hydrangea deciduous shrub requires little to no pruning, and with the occasional watering will bloom all summer long.

This hydrangea blooms on old wood in early spring so be sure to avoid springtime pruning. The best time of year to prune Oak hydrangea's overall shape is in early summer after it finishes flowering.

Cut back dead wood or damaged stems to encourage new growth on the flowering shrub. It will produce flowers on previous year's branches. Oakleaf hydrangea pruning is an easy task and not something to worry about.

Oakleaf Hydrangea Care

Grow Hydrangea plants in rich, well-drained soil to avoid root rot. Sandy soil sites will be tolerable as this hydrangea thrives with very little attention.

Make sure it is planted in a location that receives partial sun to partial shade. It does not like full sun but will be okay with morning sun and afternoon shade.

Be sure to keep moist soil during the first year of planting oakleaf hydrangea to establish a strong root system. They are fairly drought tolerant after established though. Organically rich matter such as compost or mulch is a great addition. It prefers slightly acidic soil with a soil pH of 5.0-6.0. Use our Acidic potting soil to amend your native soil if it is not acidic enough.

Although it is native to the southeast, it is winter hardy to USDA hardiness zones 4-9 and can grow across most of the United States. It is one of the few hydrangeas native to North America.
