Hydrangea are deciduous flowering shrubs iconic for their gorgeous big blooms. Their low maintenance needs and adaptability to different soils make them a top pick for gardeners and homeowners across the United States. The options may seem endless, but hydrangeas are often broken down into a few key categories which each bring their own different appeal to their landscapes!

Bigleaf Hydrangeas

When gardeners call us asking for hydrangea recommendations, these are at the top of mind! Hydrangeas in this category encompass popular mop ead varieties such as the Penny Mac Hydrangea and the Nikko Blue Hydrangea Bush. It also includes the more exotic looking laceap family with popular shrubs like Endless Summer Twist-n-Shout. Bigleaf hydrangeas bloom on old wood meaning their flower buds form in late spring and into summer and survive through winter.

Panicle Hydrangeas

If you want a hydrangea that practically takes care of itself, panicles are where we point folks who tell us they've struggled before. These are the toughest, most sun tolerant group we grow, and they reward you with big cone shaped flower clusters instead of the rounded mophead look. Favorites like the Limelight Hydrangea and the compact Little Lime Hydrangea start out creamy green and age into soft pinks and rose as the season cools. The best part for beginners? Panicle hydrangeas bloom on new wood, so they flower on the current year's growth. That means even if a hard winter knocks them back, you still get blooms the same summer.

Smooth Hydrangeas

The classic here are the Incrediball Hydrangea or the Annabelle Hydrangea, famous for their enormous white snowball blooms that can get as big as a dinner plate! Like panicles, smooth hydrangeas bloom on new wood, so they're forgiving if you prune at the wrong time or get a rough winter. They tend to thrive in spots with a little afternoon shade, and they're a wonderful choice for softening a shady fence line or foundation planting.

Oakleaf Hydrangeas

Oakleaf hydrangeas are the ones we recommend to gardeners who want year round interest, not just a summer show. Named for their bold, oak shaped leaves, this Southern native gives you cone shaped white blooms in summer, then puts on a second act in fall when the foliage turns deep burgundy and bronze. Varieties like the Ruby Slippers Hydrangea handle our heat beautifully and bring gorgeous texture to a woodland border or shaded bed. Oakleafs bloom on old wood, so their buds form the year before, and their peeling cinnamon colored bark keeps things interesting long after the leaves drop.

Why Gardeners Buy Hydrangeas Online from Perfect Plants

We started growing back in 1980, and more than 45 years later we are still a family run nursery in North Florida. The hydrangeas we ship are ones our team has watered, potted, and watched come into bloom right here on the farm. That is the difference between us and a lot of online plant sellers. We are not passing along a plant from some warehouse we have never set foot in. When your hydrangea arrives at your door, it comes from people who actually grew it and want to see it thrive in your garden.

Quick Guide: Hydrangea Planting Guide

Check out the Hydrangea Plant Grow Guide for more in depth information on choosing, planting, and growing your new hydrangea plant.

  • The best time to plant hydrangeas is in the Fall followed by early Spring so the plants have the whole growing season to establish roots and produce large flower buds.
  • Plant new hydrangeas in a sheltered location with sunny mornings and shady afternoons. Hydrangeas prefer to be planted in well drained soil that is kept consistently moist and is slightly acidic.
  • When planting in the ground, dig a whole twice as wide and a few inches deeper than the root ball. Firmly expell airpockets after backfilling and thoroughly soak the soil!

FAQs About Hydrangea Plants

Planting hydrangeas in pots is a great option if you do not have a huge landscape or yard to plant them in. Smaller hydrangea plants like the Penny Mac will work perfectly in containers. Hydrangea plants in containers will need to be watered more frequently because the material of the planter evaporates water more quickly than if they were in the ground.

You can buy hydrangeas online right here from Perfect Plants. Our speciality shipping live plants to your door, fast! Cut out the hassle of driving to a nursery and stuffing your car. You'll be planting and enjoying your hydrangeas in just a few days after completing your order.

You bet they do! In fact, all our plants, including all our hydrangeas trees and shrubs, come with a 30-day warranty to give you piece of mind when purchasing. If you plants arrive damaged or they don't thrive after 30-days of receiving them we will send you a new plant.

Hydrangeas prefer to be transplanted when they are in a dormant state. This is typically in early spring or in early fall! Due to their dormant state they are not expending energy on growth so the liklihood of them experiencing transplant shock is very low!
