BRIGHT GREEN FOLIAGE WITH DEEP FENESTRATIONS TO CREATE A TROPICAL PARADISE INDOORS
The Monstera adansonii plant is quickly rising in popularity in the tropical houseplant club for its glossy foliage and easy care!
The Monstera adansonii vine, sometimes called the swiss cheese plant or monkey mask plant, produces beautiful green foliage with leaf holes that resemble swiss cheese. The holes are closely related to Monstera deliciosa but with slightly smaller leaves and uniquely shaped fenestrations. Unlike the monstera deliciosa, Adansonii monstera’s do not break around the edges leaving the heart-shaped leaves whole and intact.
Producing long vines that can either gracefully hang below the pot or use a support like a moss pole or trellis to climb, the Philodendron adansonii monsterais a sight for the eyes and an attractive specimen to add in with your indoor houseplants. Looks perfect in a hanging basket to accentuate the larger leaves.
A member of the aroid family, Monstera plants can produce flowers in the right environment. The Monstera adansonii flower is creamy white and bell-shaped and makes its way into bloom during spring. It is not very common to see it flowering when grown as an indoor plant.
MONSTERA ADANSONII CARE
Growing up to 3-6 feet tall and wide as an indoor plant, it can grow much larger as an outdoor vine with the proper support system. You can grow these tropical plants outdoors all year long in USDA zones 10-11 where there is high humidity just like in its natural habitat. The best soil for monstera adansonii is a well draining potting mix amended with peat moss. Monstera adansonii soil should be nutrient rich for the best growing results. You can fertilize your monstera annually with a slow-release fertilizer to help provide extra nutrition. Another good option is our very own Perfect Plants Liquid Fertilizer for Indoor Plants.
Monstera adansonii light requirements should be bright and indirect with protection from the hot sun. Direct light will scorch the leaves and cause them to turn brown. We recommend at least 4-6 hours of indirect sunlight to keep your swiss cheese vine happy and healthy!
You can use a monstera adansonii trellis to help the vining plant climb upwards! As it grows, it will reach towards the sunlight and produces aerial roots along the stems to help attach to surfaces. A unique sight to see!
How Often To Water Monstera Adansonii
Monstera adansonii wateringshould take place whenever the top inch of potting soil feels dry to touch about 1 inch down. Don’t overwater or underwater as this can greatly harm the plant and potentially cause root rot. A typical watering schedule could be every 1-2 weeks but it highly depends on your temperature, sunlight, and moisture where you are growing it. Be sure to choose a pot with a drainage hole.
You will need to repot monstera adansonii whenever it outgrows the pot it’s currently growing in. This will ensure the root system has plenty of space and soil to grow in so the trailing plant can get larger. The ideal repotting timeframe is around every 2 years but can vary based on the environment it is grown in.
This plant is especially quick and easy to grow which makes it perfect for house plant enthusiasts, beginners, and everything in between!
