Planting a fruit tree is one of the most rewarding things you can do in a garden.. but let's be honest, nobody wants to wait a decade for their first harvest. At Perfect Plants, we've been growing and shipping fruit trees since 1980, and the question we hear most is simple: how soon will it produce? The answer depends less on the variety and more on the tree size you choose. Fast growing fruit trees come in dwarf, semi-dwarf, and standard sizes, and that distinction matters more than anything else when it comes to time to fruit.
Since most of the fruit trees we carry are grafted, not grown from seed, they hit the ground running compared to what you'd start yourself. Grafted trees skip years of juvenile growth and get straight to the good part.
Dwarf fruit trees are the fastest producing fruit trees you can plant, commonly bearing fruit within 1 to 3 years after planting. Semi-dwarf fruit trees typically follow in 4 to 6 years, and standard-sized trees generally take 5 to 10 years before they produce well. For most home gardeners who want fruit fast, dwarf trees are the clear winner.
One thing we always tell customers, if your new tree sets fruit in its first year, remove it. We know that's hard to do, but letting a young tree pour energy into fruit before its root system is established leads to a weaker tree and smaller harvests long term. Give it two seasons to get its roots down and it will reward you with far better fruit quality and quantity for years to come.
Not sure which quick producing fruit tree is right for your yard? These are some of our most popular fast growing fruit trees for sale, all grafted and ready to establish quickly after planting.
If you're working with a patio, balcony, or a climate where winters get harsh, container fruit trees are a smart solution. Citrus, peaches, and fig trees all adapt well to patio fruit tree growing and can be moved indoors when temperatures drop. Dwarf varieties are the best fit for pots — they stay compact, produce well, and won't outgrow their container quickly.
Keep in mind that potted fruit trees need a little more attention than in-ground trees — more frequent watering, regular fertilizing, and fresh soil every few years. And before you choose a pot size, think about where you'll move it when it's fully grown and loaded with soil. A mature container tree can top a hundred pounds easily.
