The Best Types of Pecan Trees for Your Landscape

There are many large pecan tree varieties such as Elliot Pecan & Lakota Pecan that can grow up to 100 feet tall and take up a lot of space.

We also offer smaller sized dwarf pecan varieties, perfect for backyard orchards such as Pawnee Pecan, Sumner Pecan, or Zinner Pecan. Growing pecan trees in an orchard? These paper shell pecan trees are a great choice for that too.

Our trees do not ship bare root for the safety and health of the trees. They are rooted in their nursery container with soil. We offer 2 different sizes of most of these pecans: 4x4x10 inch pots or 5 gallon pots.

How to Care for A Pecan Tree Bought Online

When growing pecan trees you want to make sure you have a planting site with all the right growing conditions. Your planting site will need at least six hours of full sunlight, well-draining soil and you will need to dig a hole that’s at least two times the size of the root ball.

Once you have your site you will need to have at least two types of pecan trees: a type one pollinator and a type two pollinator. Without both varieties, your pecan trees won’t produce pecans due to lack of cross pollination.

Pecan trees are best grown in Southern states where temperatures don’t get too cold. Most pecan tree varieties can grow across the United States in USDA zones 5-9. Occasionally, they can grow in lower zones.

Depending on how big the pecan tree will become, you may need 50 feet or more between each. Some full grown pecan trees are between 40 and 70 feet wide, so they’ll need enough room to expand.

Are Pecan Trees Fast Growing?

Pecans are fast growing fruit trees! These fast growers get extremely tall with sizes of 70 to 100 feet tall at maturity. This will take several years to accomplish. The pecan tree growth rate is about 1 to 2 feet per year. Fertilizing regularly will help speed growth rates. Choose a planting site that can handle huge root development. Our grafted pecan rootstock will start producing pecans in as little as 4 years.
